# Courtroom Lingo

Meaning of words you might hear and should use in a courtroom

* **Objection** - An objection is an attorney’s formal protest that evidence, testimony, or a question from the opposing party should not be allowed. Types of objection: <https://www.clio.com/blog/objections-in-court/>

* **Overruled** - To reject an attorney's objection to a question to a witness or admission of evidence.

* **Sustained** - If the judge agrees he/she will rule "sustained," meaning the objection is approved and the question cannot be asked or answered.

* **Acquittal** - A jury verdict that a criminal defendant is not guilty, or the finding of a judge that the evidence is insufficient to support a conviction.

* **Testimony** - Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.

* **In Contempt of Court -** Under Florida law, Contempt of Court is an act calculated to obstruct, hinder, or defy a court in the administration of justice. Contempt may be direct or indirect, and criminal or civil, and may include jail penalties and other consequences.

* **Recess** - To request a short break from the trial
